Gingerbread is the charity that stands with and supports all single parent families – so they thrive because of their family make up and not in spite of it.
We work to achieve this by providing practical and emotional support for today, and campaigning for change for tomorrow.
Why is our mission to support single parent families?
There are nearly two million single parents with majority care for their children in Britain today – they do a brilliant job, but juggling family life with work and financial challenges can be tough. Many single parents face financial insecurity, stigma and social isolation so our work focuses on reducing these challenges.
We are committed to tackling financial disadvantage faced by single parent families, and improving their mental health and wellbeing.
Why?
Disadvantage, inequality and injustice
- The unique needs of single parent families are often ignored by Government, public, private and third sectors
- Single parent families are twice as likely to live in poverty as couple parent families
- Most single parents work but they are often trapped on low incomes that don’t cover basic living costs
- Single parents have less flexibility than couple parents and rely on childcare so they can work and progress. Expensive childcare is a barrier to work and means many single parents are forced into debt
Loneliness, isolation and stress
- Single parents are more likely to experience issues with their mental health and wellbeing
- Financial, emotional and social pressures on single parents make it harder for them to cope with everyday life and life shocks
- There are many routes into single parenthood (bereavement, relationship breakdown and domestic violence) and these increase the risk of loneliness and isolation
How?
Advocacy, solidarity and influence
Gingerbread changes the system by challenging negative attitudes which lead to discrimination.
We provide emotional, practical and financial support to single parents.
We campaign for access to:
- improved mental health and wellbeing support
- affordable and accessible family law
- support with money, debt and welfare rights
We work to ensure every single parent knows that Gingerbread is there to help.
